Steel vs aluminium
Steel Crittall (original brand, est. 1849, still manufactured in Witham, Essex) — 20mm sightlines, slimmest profile, heritage-correct, U-value 1.4–1.6 W/m²K with double glazing. Aluminium Crittall-style (IDSystems, Sky-Frame, Schüco, locally fabricated) — 35–60mm sightlines, U-value 1.2–1.6 W/m²K, easier to source, faster lead times, 40–60% cheaper. For listed buildings and proper Crittall replacement go steel; otherwise aluminium look-alikes deliver 90% of the visual at 50% of the price.
Best uses in London
Internal Crittall-style room dividers — separating kitchen-diner from snug or kitchen from utility — most-fitted application 2024–2026. Crittall-look French doors and bifolds to garden — popular in Victorian and Edwardian rear extensions. Industrial-loft conversions with Crittall partitioning. Front-elevation Crittall restoration in 1930s/Art Deco properties.
Lead time and installation
Steel Crittall: 12–20 weeks lead time from order; longer for listed-building bespoke. Aluminium look-alikes: 4–10 weeks. Both require accurate templating; allow opening tolerances. Original steel Crittall in heritage properties may need restoration not replacement (£800–£1,800 per window restored).
