Pump-and-bowl: pre-cast resin/stone bowl + 30W submersible pump on timer. £450–£950 supplied + installed. Maintenance: rinse + descale 2× yearly. Wall-mounted cascade: lion-mask or modern slot spout + collection trough; integrated reservoir; 50W pump. £950–£2,250. Formal rill: linear channel 0.4–0.8m wide × 6–14m long, EPDM-lined or stone-built with weir at each end; reservoir below ground; 250W pump. £4,500–£8,500. Reflective pool: 3–5m² shallow black-finished pool with infinity edge or weir, EPDM + stone coping; pump + filter; 250–500W pump. £8,500–£18,500 (Tom Stuart-Smith style). Naturalistic wildlife pond: 4–8m² flexi-liner pond, varied depth (shallow shelf for marginals, deep zone for fish), no pump or solar pump only. £1,850–£4,500. All require Building Regs awareness if >300mm deep + child-safety (gate, mesh, or design depth <300mm).
Construction + materials
Excavation: dig to spec depth + 100mm allowance for sand bedding + EPDM liner (1mm thickness, butyl rubber). Geotextile underlay 200gsm both sides of EPDM. Edge detail: stone coping (Yorkstone, granite) overhanging water 50mm to hide liner edge. Plumbing: 32mm flexible hose from pump to discharge; valves accessible for winter drain. Electrics: armoured cable 6mm² from house consumer unit to RCD-protected outdoor outlet, IP67-rated; £550–£950 supplied + installed by electrician. Reservoir: typical 80–200L below-ground tank with float-switch pump.
Planning + maintenance + winter
No planning permission for garden water features under PD. Listed building gardens: heritage detailing required (no modern infinity-edge in Grade II garden settings). Maintenance: weekly skim of leaves Apr–Oct; monthly descale of pump intake; annual full clean + UV bulb replace (if filtered). Winter: drain pump + reservoir Oct–Mar to prevent frost damage; cover reflective pools or run heated anti-freeze tablets. Annual maintenance cost £250–£650 if owner-managed; £950–£2,250 contracted to garden maintenance company.
