Circuit topology
Minimum BS 7671:2018: 1 lighting circuit per floor (single 6A circuit per ground/first floor) — adequate for small dwelling. Best practice: separate circuit per zone — kitchen, living/dining, hallway/stair, master bedroom-group, family bedroom-group, family bathroom, en-suite, study, utility, external — typical 3-bed Victorian 8–14 lighting circuits. Benefits: granular control (zone-specific dimming + smart-switch + scene), fault isolation (one circuit trip does not blackout whole house), retrofit flexibility (add accent circuit without re-pulling existing). Cable: 1.5mm² Twin + Earth (T+E) — current-carrying capacity 17.5A; 6A protective device. 2.5mm² T+E only required for very long circuit runs or heavy LED count. Drop wiring (switch-drop): 1.5mm² T+E from junction-box in ceiling void to back-box at switch position; dual-drop for two-way switching (hallway, stair, landings); 3-way drop for three-way (rare — usually KNX/Loxone replaces multi-way mechanical). Switch positions: Approved Document M (accessibility) requires 450–1200mm above floor in new + altered dwellings. Standard: 1100mm horizontal (light switch) + 1050mm (door handle) consistent line.
Dimmer compatibility
TRIAC dimmer (most common — Aurora, Collingwood, MK Dimension, Varilight V-Pro) compatible with LED rated 'TRIAC dimmable' or 'leading-edge dimmer'. Minimum load: 10W typical TRIAC dimmer requires 10W+ on circuit (single 8W LED downlight may fail to dim — combine multiple). Maximum load: typically 250W or 400W per dimmer (derate for LED). 0-10V dimmer: industrial/commercial standard; not common domestic but used for high-quality dimming with separate control wire. DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface): each fitting individually addressable + dimmable via DALI controller; £450–£1,800 for DALI router + £25–£85 per DALI driver — premium domestic and AV-integrated rooms (cinema, study, master bedroom). Smart dimmer (Lutron, Loxone Tree, KNX): bus-controlled; scene programming; voice; circadian. Standard dimmer never on motion sensor circuit (TRIAC dimmer + PIR = flicker, lamp damage). Bathroom + outdoor: IP44 dimmer or pull-cord switch; remote switch outside bathroom + IP-rated luminaire inside.
Future-proofing + smart switch
Switch back-box: 35mm depth standard; 47mm 2-gang deep for smart switch (deeper modules). Ducting from switch position to ceiling void: 25mm conduit for future smart-switch retrofit (Lutron Caséta, Loxone Touch, KNX bus). Loop-in at switch (instead of loop-at-ceiling): brings neutral to switch position — required for smart switches that consume small standby power; older 'loop-at-ceiling' wiring sends only switched line to switch (no neutral) = limits smart-switch options. Specify 'neutral at every switch' at first-fix. Bus cable (KNX or Loxone Tree): green KNX-grade twisted pair pulled alongside power at first-fix from CU to every switch position — £450–£1,200 cable + labour premium for whole-house. Smart-switch retrofit-ready: £8,500 spent at first-fix saves £25,000+ later retrofit. Heritage: surface-mount brass conduit + Crabtree period-style switches preserve aesthetic + maintain modern circuit topology — premium £85–£185 per switch position.
