When macerator needed
Gravity drainage requires 110mm pipe at 1:40 fall to reach existing soil + vent pipe (SVP) or main drain. Impractical scenarios: (1) basement bathroom below external drain invert level; (2) loft conversion WC distant from existing SVP route + structural ceilings make 110mm pipe routing impractical; (3) garden room/annexe WC distant from house drainage; (4) en-suite added to bedroom where 110mm gravity route through occupied rooms below unacceptable; (5) heritage/Listed Building where 110mm pipe through original fabric refused by Conservation. Macerator pumps waste through 22mm copper or 32mm waste pipe — fits in much smaller building voids; can rise vertically 4–5m + run horizontally 50–100m to nearest stack/drain. Drawbacks: mechanical pump can fail (typically 8–15 year life); noise on flush (70–85dB during operation); blockage risk from inappropriate items; power required (13A radial supply — RCBO protected); slightly higher maintenance than gravity. Permitted use only where gravity drainage genuinely impractical (Building Regs Approved Document H + Water Regs).
Types + selection
WC macerator (Saniflo SaniPro XR, Sanitop, SaniSlim — slim profile behind WC): WC-only; £450–£850. WC + basin macerator (Saniflo SaniAccess, SaniFlat): £550–£950. Whole-bathroom macerator (Saniflo SaniBest Pro, SaniLift, Stiebel Eltron Compact P): WC + basin + bath + shower discharge to single pump unit; £950–£1,800. Sump pump (basement bathroom + utility): SaniFloor, Sanispeed Plus — submerged or above-floor sump pumps grey water + black water; £1,200–£2,500. Critical specification: model rated for both grey + black water; discharge height (vertical lift 4–5m max) + discharge length (50–100m horizontal); pipe diameter 22mm (small) or 32mm (larger); RCD-protected dedicated 13A radial. Install: WC connected directly to macerator unit hidden behind cistern boxing or in service duct; discharge pipe routed at slight upward angle to vertical lift + then 1:200 fall horizontal to discharge into existing SVP or drain; AAV at high point of discharge pipe to prevent airlock; isolation valve at unit for service.
Maintenance + lifespan
Annual service recommended: descale (London hard water builds scale on macerator blade + impeller — accelerates wear); check non-return valve seating; clear sediment from sump; £125–£250 service visit. Blockage callout: £150–£385 (typically inappropriate item flushed — wet wipes top cause). Replacement: 8–15 year life depending on usage + water hardness + maintenance; £450–£850 unit + £150–£385 install. Power outage: macerator does not work — backflow risk if WC used. Noise mitigation: enclose macerator in sound-insulated cabinet; locate in service void away from bedrooms; Stiebel Eltron significantly quieter than Saniflo basic. Insurance: declare to home insurance (special drainage installation). Gravity always preferred where feasible.
