Natural vs synthetic paint chemistry
Synthetic emulsion (Dulux Trade, Crown, Leyland): acrylic or vinyl polymer binder + petroleum-derived. VOC <30 g/L (low-VOC range) to 200+ g/L (gloss). Acrylic film impermeable — traps moisture in walls. Embodied carbon ~3.5 kgCO2e/L. Natural clay paint (Earthborn Claypaint, Edward Bulmer): clay + chalk + plant-oil binder + mineral pigment. Zero VOC. Highly breathable (vapour permeable). Embodied carbon ~1.2 kgCO2e/L. Natural lime paint (Bauwerk, Cornish Lime): calcium hydroxide + mineral pigment. Reacts with CO2 to form calcium carbonate (carbonation) — net carbon-sequestering. Heritage spec for lime-plastered walls. Mineral silicate paint (Keim, Graphenstone): potassium silicate binder + mineral pigment. Permanently bonds with mineral substrate. 50-year+ life on masonry exterior. Plant-oil paint (Auro, Osmo): linseed/sunflower-oil binder. Traditional finish for timber. Slow-drying (12–24 hr per coat) but very durable.
Where natural paints matter
Critical: lime-plastered walls (heritage restoration, listed buildings, period restoration) — synthetic paint traps moisture causing lime plaster failure + damp issues. Builderr Tooting Victorian + Islington Canonbury Georgian both natural-paint spec throughout. Important: occupant air quality (bedrooms, children's rooms, asthma sufferers) — zero-VOC reduces indoor air pollution. Useful: chemically sensitive occupants; pregnancy; new-build occupant move-in (VOC off-gassing weeks-to-months from synthetic paints). Less critical: ceilings, infrequently-used rooms, exterior surfaces (where carbon difference small vs durability + cost trade-off).
Cost + practical considerations
Cost premium: 1.5–3× standard emulsion. Coverage similar (8–10m²/L 2 coats). Application: clay paints brush-roller as standard; lime paints brush-only (rough texture); silicate paints brush + roller, only on mineral substrate (won't bond to previously synthetic-painted surfaces). Drying time: natural paints 2–4 hr touch dry, 12–24 hr recoat (vs 1–2 hr synthetic). Colour palette: Edward Bulmer 100+ historic colours; Earthborn 70+ contemporary; Farrow & Ball + Little Greene have low-VOC ranges that bridge natural + premium synthetic. Builderr's standard spec for whole-house renovations: Little Greene Intelligent matt emulsion (low VOC, broad colour range, mainstream price); for heritage projects upgrade to Edward Bulmer or Bauwerk.
