Construction, materials and weatherproofing
London outdoor kitchens face full UK weather — must be specified for sustained rain, freeze-thaw, summer sun. Carcass: concrete block render-finished, or steel-frame system with marine ply panels; never plain MDF or chipboard. Countertop materials: porcelain (best — non-porous, freeze-resistant, heat-resistant £180–£420/m²); granite (good — slight porosity, requires sealing £220–£480/m²); quartz (avoid — UV degrades resin within 3–5 years); concrete (acceptable when sealed, develops patina); hardwood (iroko, idigbo — needs annual oiling). Cabinet fronts: stainless steel (marine grade 316 ideal; 304 acceptable for sheltered installs); waterproof composite; powder-coated aluminium. Appliances: must be outdoor-rated (Beefeater, Napoleon, Lynx, Bull — designed for ambient water and UV exposure); domestic indoor BBQs and ovens fail at exterior install. Shelter: free-standing kitchen in unsheltered position has 50% lifespan of identical kitchen under pergola or covered loggia. Specify a roof, pergola or covered terrace integration in design.
Services and first-fix
Water: cold supply from house at 22mm copper or MDPE; insulated to prevent freezing (lag pipe; consider isolation valve and drain-down for winter); drainage to soil pipe (extended from house) or soakaway. Cost £450–£1,200 for water supply + drainage 5–10m from house. Gas: from existing house gas meter via 22mm copper underground pipe to outdoor kitchen; isolation tap inside house; bayonet point at outdoor unit. Gas Safe-registered installation mandatory £450–£950. Alternative: dedicated bottled propane (47kg cylinder) — cheaper install but ongoing cylinder swap cost. Electric: 230V supply from house consumer unit (Part P certified); 30mA RCD protection; IP65-rated socket outlets; weatherproof junction boxes. Cost £450–£950 for electrical first-fix. Wiring runs in conduit, buried 450mm minimum. Lighting: integrated LED task lighting at countertop level + ambient pergola/canopy lighting + bollard lighting on access path. Sound and TV: optional but increasingly standard — wired Cat6 to TV position; speaker cabling to ceiling speakers (Sonos Outdoor, Bose Marine).
Pizza ovens and live-fire features
Pizza ovens are the single most-popular outdoor cooking feature in 2026 London gardens. Portable wood-fired (Ooni Karu 16, Gozney Roccbox) £350–£800 — fits on countertop or freestanding; bakes pizza in 60–120 seconds at 450°C; popular budget option. Built-in gas pizza oven (Gozney Dome S1, Alfa Brio) £1,800–£3,800 — install in cabinet, propane connection or mains gas; convenient and pizza-quality. Built-in wood-fired masonry oven (custom-build with brick dome and chimney, or kit-form Forno Bravo, Casa Mia) £4,500–£12,000+ — authentic, lifelong feature, requires chimney through pergola/structure (planning may apply). Live-fire grill (Argentinian-style asado, Big Green Egg + table cabinetry, kamado grill) £1,800–£4,500. Smoker (Traeger Pro 780, Big Green Egg XL with smoker chip) £950–£2,800. Considerations: ventilation, neighbour smoke nuisance (legal in London but social), winter usability (covered/sheltered cooking essential).
