Profiles
Chamfered/pencil-round (modern) — 95–120mm height, clean lines, contemporary kitchens. Torus — rounded top profile, mid-century standard. Ogee — S-curve, Victorian and Edwardian period homes. Tall Victorian/Edwardian — 200–250mm tall ogee or moulded skirting, heritage-correct for period homes; modern reproductions in MDF perform identically to softwood. Pictureline rails — 1.7–1.8m AFFL in Victorian/Edwardian rooms.
Material
MDF (primed) — most common 2026 spec, stable, no knots, perfect paint finish, cheapest. Softwood (knotted pine) — needs filling and sealing or knots bleed through paint. Hardwood (oak, walnut) — for clear-finish heritage projects only. Pre-primed MDF saves a coat on site.
Programme implications
Skirting fits after flooring (so flooring tucks under), architrave fits after doors. Painting in factory or sprayed on site delivers cleanest finish — brush marks unavoidable when on-site brush-painted. Allow 2–3 days for fit + paint of typical 4-bed period home.
