Why swifts need bricks
Common Swift (Apus apus) UK Red List bird since 2021 — population declined 60% 1995–2020. Cause: loss of nest sites (soffit/fascia replacement, eaves closure during refurb, modern construction with no roof void access). Swifts nest only in cavities accessed via small holes (~28×65mm) — historically beneath eaves + in stone walls. Modern building practice eliminates suitable cavities. Swift bricks (integrated cavity bricks) restore this habitat at zero ongoing cost. Manufacturers: Manthorpe SB1, Action for Swifts (AfS) BC9, Eco Bat Bricks, Schwegler 25. Internal cavity 120–180mm × 200mm × 90mm with entry hole 28×65mm at base. Brick dimensions match standard UK brick 215×102.5×65mm — drops into normal coursing.
Installation spec
Height: minimum 5m above ground — swifts won't nest lower (predator risk). Aspect: north + east faces preferred — avoid south + west summer overheating. Clear flight path: 1.5m unobstructed below entry hole + no overhanging trees within 3m. Cluster: install 3–8 bricks together — swifts colonial, social cue increases occupation. Mortar around brick standard sand/cement; entry hole faces outward; internal cavity drains via weep hole at base. Spacing within cluster: 200–300mm apart. Builderr standard spec: 5 bricks per new extension wall above 5m height, clustered, north or east face. Cost addition negligible: £125–£325 supplied for 5-brick cluster + 30 min bricklayer time at first-fix masonry.
LPA policy + take-up
Increasingly mandated by London LPAs as planning condition or biodiversity enhancement requirement: Camden (Local Plan Policy A3 + Biodiversity SPD), Islington (Policy CG4), Hackney (Local Plan DM 13), Newham (Local Plan SC4), Brighton-led 'Swift Brick Bill' campaign drove broader uptake. Builderr practice: offer swift bricks on every project regardless of LPA mandate — client cost £125–£325 negligible vs biodiversity benefit + planning condition compliance + customer brand value. Occupation rate: 15–35% within 3 years (swifts return to natal site — slow colonisation in new areas). Pair with swift call lures (Bluetooth speaker playing recorded swift calls dawn/dusk May–June for 2–3 seasons) to accelerate occupation to 60–80%.
