Tadelakt
Tadelakt: traditional Moroccan polished lime plaster with natural oil finish; inherently waterproof (used in Marrakech hammams 800+ years); seamless application (no tile joints, no grout lines); naturally antibacterial + breathable. Application: 4 coats over 5–10 days — base coat lime + sand + lime wash; intermediate coats build colour + texture; final coat polished with stone (galet); black-soap rubbed in (saponification reaction creates waterproof barrier). Colour: natural earth tones (ochre, terracotta, ivory, taupe, navy, sage) — pigment in lime; consistent through depth — minor scratches not visible. Cost £150–£385/m² supplied + applied (UK installer rate); specialist Tadelakt London / Tadelakt By Design / Plaster Works. Best for: wet rooms (seamless tanking), shower walls, around bath, sink splashback, hammam, statement living wall. Maintenance: re-soap annually (olive oil black soap rubbed in) maintains waterproof; minor scratches polished out; 80+ year life with reasonable care. Heritage + sustainable: lime breathable + carbon-sequestering (lime absorbs CO2 during curing); zero VOC; biodegradable. Premium spec where seamless waterproof aesthetic + heritage natural material desired.
Microcement
Microcement (also Microtopping, Microscreed): polymer-modified cementitious overlay 2–4mm thick applied over existing substrate (tile, concrete, plywood, plasterboard); flexible reinforcement (fibreglass mesh) embedded between coats; final polished + sealed with polyurethane or polyaspartic coating. Aesthetic: continuous concrete-look, marble-look, or coloured matt finish; no grout joints; modern industrial minimal or warm tactile depending on pigment. Application: 3–5 coats over 4–7 days — primer + scratch coat + finish coats + sealer; substrate preparation critical (must be sound + dry + flat). Cost £85–£245/m² supplied + applied (mid-range Polished Beton; premium Pandomo + Mortex Belgium £185–£385/m²). UK brands: Ideal Work (Italian), Microtopping (Italian Diasen), Pandomo, Cemex Polished Concrete, Mortex (Belgian, premium). Best for: kitchen floor (seamless flow into dining/living open-plan), bathroom floor + walls (water-resistant with proper sealer), feature walls, fireplace surround, stair, kitchen splashback. Pros: continuous (no joints), thin (4mm overlay on existing surface — no demolition + screed), durable (5–10 year life on floor with re-seal). Cons: minor cracking possible (substrate movement); requires re-seal (3–7 years on floor depending on traffic); not as waterproof as tadelakt (sealer wears, water can penetrate over time).
Venetian plaster
Venetian plaster (Marmorino, Stucco Veneziano, Spatolato): polished lime + marble dust + pigment — Italian heritage technique; reflective marble-look depth without solid marble cost or weight. Application: 3–5 coats hand-trowelled lime + marble dust slurry; each coat dried + sanded; final coat polished with stainless steel trowel to high gloss + wax sealed. Aesthetic: polished marble-look, sometimes with mottled depth ('movement'), reflective + tactile; subtle colour shift with light angle. Cost £125–£385/m² supplied + applied (high-end Italian-trained applicator; premium Pandomo Italian £185–£485/m²). Brands: Cebos (Italian — Marmorino, Tropico, San Marco), Pandomo, San Marco (UK distributor). Best for: reception room feature wall, hallway, dining room, master bedroom headboard wall, spa-like bathroom + powder room. Restrained use — entire room in Venetian overwhelms; one feature wall or single ceiling = statement. Compare with marble alternative: Carrara marble cladding 20mm £450–£950/m² supplied + fitted (vs Venetian £125–£385) + greater weight + cost + structural; Venetian gives marble look at fraction of cost + weight + carbon. Heritage: lime + marble dust = breathable + sustainable; suited to Victorian/Georgian heritage + Listed Building (LBC sympathetic, traditional material). UK installer scarcity: 6–12 week lead time for Italian-trained specialist; budget + book early.
